I Was in karate since seven and played the drums also.
It wasn't until ten when I started to get into robotics but mostly I just built things off the books not by my knowledge.

I was never into cooking or dancing

I was into three catagories
Martial arts, Music, Electronics

Wow I find that hard to believe

i was pestered constantly as apart from being OBVIOUSLY MORE INTELIGENT i am a foreigner (english) in italy so am the odd one out. frankly i find 99.999.. % of people around me are 1000 % (yes u read that right 1 K) ignorant superficial stupid and not all that bright at all. for this reason most tactics to avoid bullying/pestering are often useless because the bully's are so STUPID and LOW LEVELLED that they just find anything amusing.
despite this though i was recognised as being intelligent and knowledgable but other were very gelous and frankly i still just don't understand why they are so dumb i mean just simple things do not get to them.
i was caused a lot of trouble because i read (in both english and italian) for these pricks reading a story book was studying and they find no pleasure from reading and frankly i feel that again they were gelouse and WORRIED that i was getting to be MUCH better than them because they just could not be bothered to read or study anything and anybody with more than sufficient (6, C) was considered apart from the rest.
at work my boss is not much better but i just tell him what to go do with homself. anyhow now he has FIBALY realised i am above normal he just wants to use me all he can and now i just say yea yea and then do as i know is best and if necesary just tell him to F off and learn what he is talking about before giving me his cocked theories.
bottom line I just can't wait to get outa here (requires some money i mush save and completion of a specialization course i am doing) and maybe by luck (more than anything else more than up to now) the only person I find interesting and like being with that is a girl will come away with me but unfortunately we are merly at the begining of real friendship after 4 yrs of formal friendship and i thinkactually she does not find her surroundings that inspiring either. she has still to finish schol though and seems quite dedicated so time will only tell

im involved in tech club (building robots) and such, but people realize that im more than that...

I dunno...the bullies I told on broke down into tears lol. It was pretty cool.

My situtation is a bit weird actually. I don't actually have any "nerd" friends. Most of my friends are guys who aren't going to university and are working in consruction and go to bars and stuff. I'm nothing like my most of friends and I don't seem to fit in very well the so-called nerds. A lot of them kind of piss me off actually (who the hell continues to put up his hand just to rephrase what the prof has just said?)

Back in middle school i got picked on quite abit. It all stoped after i beat the crap out one of them... I got kicked off the bus for a week for that one...

Personally i think what comes around goes around. I don't know if i am just thinking too highly of myself, but i am sure one day i will be much better off than them...

I was picked on a lot in school . The worst part is not the fights but the picking on that leads to the fights . I dealt with it by keeping to myself more and by lifting weights. Sometimes people think I'm shy because I don't say much ,but I'm usually checking to make sure it's ok to speak up. I only have a few good friends because of this. A couple weeks ago one of those good friends killed himself. I wish I could have told him to stick around. Maybe you can be one of those people who stop someone else from being bullied.

A parent should be enough in a child's life to be able to prevent the suicide of a young person from happening. I was never picked on in school badly, though I was always an 'outsider' I never donned a trench coat (wait I did) but I never shot up a school. I grew out of the wearing black all the time, especially in the summer time, cause well it's DAMN HOT. I was a 'quiet one', only got into two fights that I can think of, and it was more like me being hit and pouting about it to someone else I thought should fix it, which did about absolutely nothing.

Then again I'm similar to the guys dknguyen seems to hang out with. I work at a metal finishing plant, I do inspection shipping receiving processing, the whole nines. From a 1000lbs skid of raw parts to the paperwork, down to the x-ray fluoroscopic analysis of the materials that make up the coating we ship. I have little tolerance for technologist's, but I'm an engineer at heart.

I hate to sound trite or uncaring, but I have absolutely no pain to share with anyone that commits suicide. It is the ultimate selfish act of disregard to the feelings of the people around you.

Interesting, only 8 out of the 29 who voted say geeks don't get bullied. I agree but I think it' a lot more complicated than that.

First it depends on who you define a geek, I think I can recall two definitions.

1. Apparently stupid kid who does poorly in class, is crap at sports and has trouble making friends.
2. Highly intelligent kid who does really well in class and might not be the best at sport or making friends.

Child Number 1
Will almost certainly be bullied because they have a very low self-esteem. They really want to make friends so much so they're easily lead and sometimes even get themselves into trouble by doing stuff to try to impress the bad boys.

They could be reasonably intelligent but suffer learning difficulty(is) (such as Asperger's syndrome dyslexia, dyspraxia etc.) or they might be just plain thick/retarded.

Child Number 2
Might have the odd insult thrown at them by a bully but it normally doesn't bother them as they can usually come up with a quick witted retort. They often have quite high self-esteem, they know they're more cleaver than most of the teachers let alone the other students. They're often too busy in the computer room or electronics department to play sports and socialise.

I don't think stereotypes apply here, people with low self confidence will get bullied while stronger people won't.

Well i dont remember to see much of this bulliness in school but then again i didnt spent much time there cuz i was a PC games junkie and all the time i was in these internet caffes. Although i remember most kids avoided me (except for a few friends) because i have a grim face all the time and back then i was listening to black metal death metal dressed all in black and all that rebel stuff and most of them thought i was a Satan worshiper .
Bottom line i think Nigel is right u have to stand up to these guys. If their picking on weaker opponents that means their weak and they dont have self confidence so if u confront them then their confidence will be even more weakened and in a fight that is crucial

some update: i read about this martial arts think. well if ur not serious about this its a waste of time. Martial arts are indeed forms of art it takes much dedication and an appeal for the oriental way of life if u want to understand it and master it. If u take a martial art course just for the fight u'll never win against a boxer. I had some fights and most of the time he who throws the first big punch right in the nose wins
