Do we really need a multi function SMPS control chip when we have a micro too?

Interesting.
Did u ever observe that if the pulse width of the TL494 gets under say 8uSec (with pin 13 tied hi) with a low frequency (1K clock) it will divide the clock in half and widen the pulse width?

What is your chip of choice now?

That really depends on what you want to do.
There is a family of parts that includes the UC3843. They are current mode which I like. 8-pin. Good for 110/220 power supplies.

Here is a interesting part. Used for those wall wort, cell phone charger things. Most of these have a 700V MOSFET inside.

I am using some small DC to DC parts that run at 1mhz. Very small inductor, capacitor.
I like resonant power supplies but that is complicated.

What kind of a part are you looking for.

Quick question Ron...

Usually, with the tl494, to achieve a 96% Duty range I would have pin 13 tied to 5V and parallel the two outputs.
Can't the same be done with pin 13 tied to ground and a single output used?

I think you are right. If the Cs and Es are tied together pin 13 has no function.
