Driving custom LCD glass with a PIC

My LCD will have 21 segments which begs the question whether to ditch multiplexing.

So, is that 21 individual segments and a backplane pin? If so, use one of these. It directly drives 33 LCD segments with only a resistor & a capacitor as outboard components. Texas Instruments p/n MM5453N.
