Ok my notebook has firewire. My new DVD player has alot of connectors. SCART and s-video. Unfortunately the notebook does not have s-video as an input.

Is it possible to buy or make a functioning connection with a cable to go from
my dvd player to my notebook and be able to record whats comming through
the signal without adding a capture device??

Some connections and terms on the back of my dvd player are new to me.

No. You need a capture device. This is not that complicated, capture cards for notebooks are relativly inexpensive and can use a USB or firewire port.
