H-Bridge help: What transistors/MOSFETS to use for 500ma to 5A

I know how to use bi-polar transistors, just not MOSFET's. I just figured MOSFET's were bipolar transistors with higher amp gain...

A Mosfet doesn't have a DC input current like a transistor so it doesn't have an amp gain.
An ordinary Mosfet needs a 10V input to turn on fully.
A transistor needs a DC input current at a voltage around 0.7V to turn on fully.
A Mosfet has a very high input capacitance.
A transistor has a very low input capacitance.
They are completely different.

Theres more to H-Bridges than you may think, using an IC will save you trouble.
The SN754410 will almost meet your running specs and will thermally shutdown under high loads.
The L298 will almost meet your stall specs but requires the clamp diodes.
