I2S to Toslink

I need an optical audio output from a unit that only has analogue left and right.If you need to know it's one of these......

I've found the digital audio out pin on the main audio processor which is in I2S format.Can I use this to directly drive a standard 3 pin Toslink transmitter, or does it involve other components as well?

I think (not certain) that in my digital recorders the i2s is connected to fiber (toslink) transmitter/receiver.

So can anyone else confirm for me (my brain will catch fire if I read through that lot) if I2S is purely internal and PCM will always be external digital audio?
