Laser or Infared Lap Counter

I'm doing a project for school, and I wanted to build a lap counter for large objects, such as a go cart. I'm not sure how to go about doing this, so I am looking for a bit of guidance. I'm pretty experienced with electronics and whatnot, so I'm sure I won't have great amounts of difficulty doing this if I can just find some instructions somewhere.
