I bet the piezo transducer makes a horrible noise.

What's wrong with the Joul thief?

It probably costs less and is more efficient.

The only time I'd do it this way is if I wanted to power a piezo buzzer and an LED at the same time from a 1.5V cell which is never.
 
Google for Joule Thief as Hero999 said.

Simpler and works very well. 1.5 Volt battery will still light LED at < 0.4 Volts
 
This can perhaps be useful as a turn signal indicator for Bicycles, where the buxzzer ensures that the signal is switched ON.
