Moving to Florida

G'day Mike,
After Frankfla's post have you considered selling up everything and coming over to Oz, the way the US is going it's the last place on earth I'd want to move to........ We do have a similar health system to Canada and if your a guru in your trade there is BIG $$$$ to be made here as skilled people are in short supply. Just up the road from me is a 90 acre property which you get for 350K and then you could build the house of your dreams and live a life where you can go out and leave the house unlocked etc and not worry about crime and living a metre from your neighbor.

Just throwing a bit wood on the fire mate but it is something to think about.....

Cheers Bryan

BrownOut and Frank,

I am aware of the high insurance cost, the Spanish and the crime level in Miami, that is why I was looking at a different area within Florida. We bought a house for really cheep in 2009 so it is fully paid, the house is made out of cement blocks so it would be hard to catch on fire and it has bars in windows and doors so the risk of burglars is low therefore we don't have an insurance. As for the Spanish well my wife is Spanish and he mom only speaks Spanish so I am pretty much on my way to learning it.

Bryan,
On your side of the world it sounds interesting but I still have family here and specially my 22 years old son so I can not go that far.

Mike

....I've heard if you just show up with your luggage on the day of a cruise departure, if there is room available you can get as low as $200/person and that would be awesome!

Mike
I've heard that also but was never sure if it was true or not. I guess the cruise lines figure it's still profitable to book every cabin even at cost since the vacationer will spend money on services and such regardless.

Hola lilimike,
Good point on the insurance, windstorm is the biggest part you just hope the big one doesn't come. You also have the language licked. Have you done some job searches to see how that is?
As to other area seems like the east coast from Jupiter to the Keys is dominated by the NY NJ crowd. The south west coast is more mid west folks. So pick which style you like to be around. And the average age is going to be higer than most other places. And the shopping and selection is matched to the crowd you live in. Both areas have a large hispanic group, densest in the south east and around any large city. When you get to central to northern part of the state it is going to be a bit different. Not much knowledge of up there. Other than it isn't at the NY NJ speed and people are a bit more civil. Seems to me Florida on a whole is a transtransient state. Not a lot of roots here, people come and go no real idenity of its own.
Depends on how you are and what you like to be around if it would suit you. If you like being around nice friendly happy helpful civil people stay out of south east Florida. Also avoid any big city maybe live outside.

As to the cruises I never heard of the show up for $200. A coworker went on many cruises and was on their list. They knew he lived close so he would get a call from time to time a week or so before a ship was leaving and asked if he wanted to go for a very low price. They needed to fill up the ship. He would get prices about $300 a person for a $1000 or so normal price. I figure you could probally contact them and try to get on one of those lists.

:)Don't let audioguru alone there..
I went on a training course in Colorado then worked in Orlando, Florida for a week. I am lucky I wasn't killed nor mugged.
The news there is full of crimes.

Don't leave Canada because all the American criminal visitors are in jail so it is safe here.
Everybody in the US has a gun so you need one too if you go to live there.

Cubans were mentioned.
I had a wonderful vacation in Cuba. The Cubans were very polite, honest and friendly. The vacation was extra nice because there were no boisterous Americans there.

Just stirring the fire.

Come to NC instead!:D

Florida seems to have too many bad storms. We get occasional hurricanes, but not usually bad, occasional snow storms, nothing serious.

We have wonderful places to go with mountains, the piedmont, and wonderful beaches. (If you ever go to beach look up Sunset Beach, NC).

Doesn't hurt to have a gun here, mostly nice people where I live!:)

AG, I'm planning to move to Canada, I like that cold showers and snows...:)

Just tell me how much it'll cost for a hectare farmland...I'd like to start some buffalo/pork farm and a small electronics parts supply shop there.

What is your opinion?

When native Canadians move outta here, there's a fair chance of lowcost farm lands :)

I have hot water heated by burning inexpensive natural gas.
It snows sometimes in winter. Never in Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Farmland is expensive in Canada because the best land is owned by families that keep owning it for many generations and never sell it.
Also, cities expand and take over farmland. My neighbourhood was built on farmland 29 years ago.

Fidel Castro let his criminal lot set sail to Florida; that's why the hordes of bad oranges in Miami and surrounding areas. AG thinks he's comfy & safe in Canada but they have their share of social misfits also.

North Carolina is a wonderful state for numerous reasons, from employment opportunities, moderate climate year round, business and residential real estate expansion, tourism, and the Andy Griffith Show was rooted there in Mayberry!! ;)

AG - you're a funny old man -- dimentia has quite the grip on you. :(
Why do you so often slam the United States?
  • Our two nations are allies
  • There is a fair amount of commerce between us
  • American's enjoy vacationing in Canada and many Canadians tour US points of interest
  • Canadian & Americans enjoy each others homegrown actors, performers, musical groups.
  • A Canadian soldier holds the current world record for the longest kill shot at beyond 1 mile (Afghan Taliban gunner)
  • An ex-US Navy Seal designed and built the .50cal rifle and specific ammunition used for that record sniper shot
  • The Canadian sniper received training by US sniper specialists
  • Both of our nations enjoy hockey and have leagues with teams from both countries
  • The NASA Space Shuttles employs a robotic service arm built by Canada
  • We call it breakfast ham - you call it Canadian bacon - the same meat from the same animal
  • America has countless maple trees and maple syrp [just like Canada]
  • Your national symbol is a maple leaf; our's is the majestic bald eagle! ( I guess we had to part ways somewhere along the way!!)
