my guess is they were trying to use circuits that emulate vacuum tube performance. i do recognize some of the "stacked" JFETS and BJTs and the circuits they form as being very similar to "solid state tubes" that were offered for ham radio equipment back in the 1970s and 1980s as direct drop in replacements for common vacuum tubes... these also ran off of 100V rails. you MIGHT be able to replace the high voltage JFETs with depletion mode MOSFETs
