Exactly my experience! I find it very enjoyable

KiCad works just fine. I tried it after some wrestling with Eagle and found easier to use (your mileage may vary).

I use Eagle to create schematics. There is a no cost version of Eagle & even you can use dip- trace & kiCAD also.
