Sony XO-5 Stereo Deck Receiver

Good evening to you all,

I need your help, I've had a Sony xo-5 in the cupboard for a long time and decided to try and fix it, the only problem is there are no manuals available for download at least not free or cheap, does anyone here have a Sony xo-5 service manual I would appreciate it very much.

Very best to you all,
Jay

Hi, Nigel,
Please see image provided. Is it me or does it say Model XO-5? little confused, Sorry

Hi, pretty well all Sony audio systems started HCD or STR, and have various numbers identifying the service manuals for the individual sections, or the entire system (speakers and everything). The name on the front is hardly ever useful, even the actual model on the back might just refer to a single sheet service manual, that refers you to the full manual or manuals.

However, in this case, the same model number is on the back - so perhaps it's an aberration that proves the rule

Unfortunately I'm no longer a Sony service agent, so have no access to download manuals from Sony any more, nor access to the thousands of paper manuals I previously had filed away. I know where they are, as they were given to a friend, but the chances of been able find a specific one are pretty remote. In fact, he might well have two or three of them, as he has been given the service manual collections of at least three TV service companies. In you search for 'hoarder' you'll probably find his picture

Is there a speaker relay in the unit?, if so do you hear it click after a few seconds of powering on?. If not one of the amplifier channels could have died - check the voltages on the output transistors, the advantage of stereo is you have two to compare.

Will let you know soon has I've finished a project I've started, if it was an amplifier channel how much what that cost approx.?

It depends what is blown, usually if the output transistors have died, it's often best to replace all transistors in the DC coupled part of the circuit - as a duff (or intermittent) small transistor can cause the outputs to blow.

Can you post an internal picture of the top of the amplifier board?.

Some viewing there, sorry, lol

Well that uses a large hybrid STK IC, mounted on the heatsink, if you get the full number of it, then you can probably download a datasheet, which will give you the pin connections, and probably an example circuit. You can then measure the voltages along the IC pins, being very careful not to short them out.

If it's faulty, the next issue is that most such devices are long since obsolete.

There are a couple of things you can try while waiting for the manual:

First, runs some deoxit or other good switch cleaner - or eve 3 in 1 oil, in tiny amounts, in to each of the pushbutton operated slide switches, and operate each switch 10 - 20 times to get it in to the contacts.

Those very frequently cause problems on audio gear that has been idle for some time.

Then, try connecting the record out from that unit to aux in on something you can use to monitor it - if it is a power amplifier fault, you should still get audio out of those sockets.

If nothing there, then a power supply fault is a possibility.

Thank you very much for your reply, rjenkinsgb, much appreciated will do what you suggested, will update you when i can , Jay

Thanks very much, Nigel, you have been very good to me, will get to it ASAP, not feeling to good at the moment with my back and joints etc., Jay

I have the manual ~ 20M.
Extracted Main PCB schematic page attached. STK459 is the output IC.
looks small but hi rez. Can be blown-up/rotated in PDF reader
Thank you SOOO much, brother, you are a gem. Will look it over and see what i can figure out with all the great help on here. Thank you so much again. Have a great weekend and stay safe, Jay
