what about using a frequency to voltage converter which goes into a op-amp window comparator

Ok thanks for that,got a day off today so will have a poke around with a meter as I'm sure I remember that someewhere there is a wire that is only live with the engine running.If that fails I'll look at the more technical ways of doing it.
