On the topic of spelling:Thank you for that, I found it really interesting - it had never occurred to me to try and find out why - nice when there's a sensible reason.
It turns out that some spellings which we Brits consider to be Americanisms are actually Brittish.
American: , apologize or apologise?
The 'ize' suffix is not an Americanization. It was used in Britain a lot earlier than the 'ise' variant. British settlers took it to the colonies, and it remained. The same is true of other words like 'mom' (from the midlands in England). Even spellings like 'color' and 'honor' - although advocated by Noah Webster - were British -English spellings.
