That old CMOS Astable or Relaxation Oscillator can also be done with simple logic gates like this.

With the information I've found so far from members like yourself is that there are much more reliable VFO circuits out there that are more stable and not prone to drift.
You may as well build it as you've already got it, just to play with :D

However, as you specify 'VFO' I presume it's for a transmitter/receiver, and you don't really want a resistor controlled oscillator for that, nor do you want a square wave output.

'VFO' isn't one of the suggested applications on the datasheet.
