volume bars idea

hi i was just playing some music and i was looking at the little bars which bounce up and down and i was just wondering if one of these would be possible to make with something like a picaxe im not sure what they call the little bars sorry i just thought it would be a cool project to play around with does anyone have any idea if this has been done or how to go about trying to do it thanks alot

It is called a VU meter.
If you google for it you can find many kits for building one.
