Just a work of caution, many of the transistor equivalent documents and software packages have shortcomings and I am afraid to say that in many cases they have proved to be wrong.
As ronsimpson says in post #7 above, look on distributors website lists to see what transistor are actually available for purchase. But, in addition, it is essential to check the transistor data sheets to make sure the the replacement transistor is at least as good as or, hopefully, better than the original transistor.
Bear in mind that, although there are millions of different transistor type numbers, from hundreds of manufacturers, there only a few different types of transistor from a functional point of view. The only area which are liable to me critical are specialist areas, especially RF.
