Awkward request but some might be able to help: nuke demo!!

Impressive but the explosion isn't really that large, it generates steam too (which is what actually explodes) so it's relatively dangerous. You could fill one of those 6 foot baloons with Hydrogen, but that's even higher on the dangerous scale unless done very carefully.

Well, you know chemical weapons are part of WMD, so showing some nasty behavior of chemicals might do the trick..........but it has to be related in a good way though.

Light off a big stink bomb =P That'll get their attention hehehe. Just tell them if they could smell that if it were a chemical weapon they'd all be dead. That'll make em pay attention.

That's a pretty good idea to drive home your point. Certain nerve and some blister agents have a smell that resembles almonds. Maybe you could atomize some almond extract and feed it into the intake of a fan that you'd point towards the audience. That will probably be much more appreciated over sulfur.

Yeah I agree completely, the nice smell bad consequences concept of doing that would be all the more potent for getting the point across.

OK, when I was kid. I used a rocket motor single stage with this one.

1. Remove all the contents of the rocket motor. Remember this has been about 40 yrs ago.
2. Take the 12v ignitor and assemble that end closed with duct tape or electrical tape.
3. fill 1/4 the way up with black powerder just as a test to see the result. Then ignite outside.

When I had this outside it was full and was in the ground. When it went off there was a Smoke ring that started out of the tubed end and continued about 100 feet up, beginning at about 1 foot in diameter and wound up at about 20 feet or so in diameter before it broke apart.

When I was a kid (not a terrorist) all my bombs went up like rockets and all my rockets blew up like you know what.

Why do terrorists come here and want us to show them how to blow themselves up?
Why are the parents proud of a child who blows itself up?

Expect cheesy replies dude, the guys have a 'good' way of showing it, but to their defense this ain't electronics.

Okay, I'm sorry if I offended anybody. And I know this isn't electronics. I did it because I thought this is the best place to find knowledgeable people/engineers.

Never mind. Forget it all.

It IS a place to find the best minds, since electrical engineers and similar guys have to be the top at their game. At the same time you gotta swallow the guys' hazing of you, since that's what seniors do to their underdogs all the time, and take the good stuff out of it.

I'd have to say Sceadwean's replies are worthwhile. ( I hope mine's too). Go do your presentation.

It is fine Vizier87. Thanks for your words. I'll never hate this place anyways. It is too great to be hated ^_^.

Hi sram,

just remind your auditorium of WWII and the bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They were relatively low on comparable TNT power (Hiroshima 5kt and Nagasaki 10kt), but they were devastating.

I saw pictures of Hiroshima where the shades of persons were burnt into a house wall.

Other than stated, not only pigs and other animals were used on nuklear test sites, but also military personnel (most of the soldiers died slowly having been exposed to nuclear radiation (Bikini Islands)).

I further guess everybody in the auditorium knows enough about nuklear power to understand that it is the ultimate power of destruction mankind has developed yet. (Many details in "Manhattan project")

I understand the policy of using nuclear weapons during war. They just expedite the processs to break the will to continue war for the opponent (enemy), but I will never understand why many civilian people must be killed to achieve that goal!

There is a lot of international lamento going on about the German Colonel who orderd close air support on two stolen fuel trucks in Afghanistan (each 40.000l). A fuel tanker is worthless as a bomb if it is full with gasoline, so the Taliban invited civilians to drag fuel out of the trucks to make them ready for use. The pilots could see who is friend or foe and just dropped their deadly load, killing about 40 or 50 civilians. (So what? They stole enemy goods!)

"Bomber Harris", well known from WWII ordered a team of specialists to develop fire bombs being able to penetrate a house from roof to the cellar and then ignite the deadly load (where the civilians looked for shelter).

Those bombs were unloaded over Cologne, Hamburg and Dresden almost eliminating all civilian lifes! Nobody gave a sh*t. It's almost parallel with the nukes over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Ported to a young boy's abilities to defend himself, calling his big brother for help, those weapons were made "big brother"!

I was soldier during the so called "cold war", and I have experienced it pretty hot. No civilians were ever involved in my actions, precise and deadly!

War is always a dirty business following the dirty business of politics!

See the pictures of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Hi Sram

Something you may want to consider is the evolution of a WMD. A WMD doesn't have to be a nuclear device, matter of fact the term was coined long before Hiroshima or Nagasaki were ever thought of or nuclear weapons in general. The term first was used around 1937 but that really matters not. Maybe using props you could cover the evolution of weapons of war to the beginning of and through what we call weapons of mass destruction. Think about it, every war man has seen has involved the development of newer and better ways to destroy his enemy. During the Civil War (there was nothing civil about it) most died not from a musket gunshot but the infection that followed. During the 1860s was a musket a WMD? Since you don't want pictures or a slide show then good props of the WMD evolution would be a must with the ability to describe those props a must.

Think about WWI and the use of gas (chemical agents) as anything Nuclear, Biological or Chemical can be a WMD. When a nuclear device was finally unleashed in WWII on Hiroshima the initial death count was placed at about 70,000 but within 5 years climbed to 140,000 as a result of the radiation aftermath. I wouldn't initially limit yourself to nuclear weapons but evolve to them. Carry a briefcase into the room and place it down away from yourself. When you conclude point out it contains 10 pounds of plastic explosive with a timed dentonator. Mention the explosive is wrapped in layers of nuclear waste. Discuss how those around it not killed by the initial blast will be dead in a few years and state why. A simple "dirty bomb".

I just don't think that limiting yourself to WMDs nuclear in nature is the only way to go. Yes, use balloons too!

First day in my electronics class the instructor casually strolled in and unrolled a long extension cord, most people were jabbering away not paying attention. He threw the female end into the (empty) metal garbage can at the front of the class then went to the side of the room and plugged it in to the wall. The resulting explosion earned him the full attention of the class.
He had given us a live demo of what happens when you overvoltage / reverse polarize a sizable capacitor.

Nothing like a shocking visual aid to grab the attention of the class. As they say; all fun and games til someone puts an eye out.

A mini fizz would be a sugar cube inside a carbonated drink bottle. As for explosions and eruptions, you are going too far!
