I was a witness in a similar situation where an employer brought a lawsuit against the former employee for hidden damages. The former employee had to pay >$40k.

While there are so many, many things wrong with that van modification, direction of drive may not be a problem. All the modifier would have to do is to fit the back axle upside down compared to normal and the forward gears would drive it forward.

You simply flip the backaxle/differential over, this reverses it's direction of travel so corrects for the extra change of rotation.

However, it's a pretty silly idea in the first place
