I've use the National Semi Simple Switchers like the LM2675, they're really nice little regulators and they run cool compared to linear device. **broken link removed**
On a sidenote the 78S05 can handle 2A but you need to keep it cool.
sorry guys this is for normal usage like a micro and SD card. Maybe a glcd or CLCD(char lcd)
