Rod touching project

I have two metal rod with a button on the tip of them. The rods will trigger an alarm when the the user touches something with them. I need a way to determine if the rods are touching each other when this happens. The rods will be on a completely different power supply.

Does the user touch both at the same time or will an alarm occur if only one is touched? What will be monitoring the buttons and short sense? Why do you want an alarm if the rods are touching? Please provide details of your project. If we get bad (or lacking) details, you may get bad advise.
Not knowing exactly what your doing I can only make a guess. But I'll save my guessing till later if this is as good as it gets.

Whoever touches first wins. For monitoring I plan on using a wireless system such as zigbee or so. It is for a game of sword fighting sort of like a lightsaber.
