I'm just getting into electronics and I decided that my first big project would be to build a single transistor pre-amp and have that feed into an amplifier circuit. Would a 2N3904 transistor be a good choice for the preamp? I'm concerned about noise and distortion. If it helps, I'll be amplifying an iPod or a CD player with this.

Hi.

I can't se any reason to not use a 2n3904. It is a "general purpose transistor".

The datasheet says the noise figure to be 5.0 dB at maximum for that spesific transistor. A quick look in the bc547 datasheet says it's NS is maximum 10 dB. So - the 2n3904 should be better on noise.
