Suggested Reading for Inverter Design

I have been doing some research recently on inverters and how they work, but is there perhaps a book or a website that someone could suggest to me on how to go about designing your own inverter?

Can you clarify the term inverter. Are we talking a 12 to 120 VAC type or a DC-DC converter or might we be talking about a grid-tie inverter. I'd also like to get a sense of power. 1 MegaWatt Solar inverter systems do exist (GE makes them). I don't have a clue how to build one, but did go to a seminar on one. I do know that they can provide local power factor correction.

144 VDC to a variable stepped up voltage is what I had in mind.
