Your capacitor C1 was in the wrong place and it disconnected some of the grounds.
Do a "star" ground like this:

Should that clean up much of the remaining noise too?

Fixed the ground wires. Faint background noise remains, but voice is loud and clear. I am working on a table with a PC 12" away, so maybe I am getting some interference from the CPU......

No. The tapping is gone. As jjw suggested, it could be caused by the cooling fan in the PC. I will take the unit to a separate area and see if there is a change.
