All the digital cameras, camcorder I have and have had can see the IR from your remote and from the Wii unit and even from fires through the smoke.
If you think you remote is not working, look at through you digital camera.
Here's a picture of the Wii bar on top of my TV, taken with a 10X zoom and no flash from my chair.

I've never tried it before. It must require pretty intense IR light, since I can't see myself on webcam in the dark:) I'll also need to see if my passive IR detector will fire upon illumination from the remote.
